Most people who seek physical therapy for traumatic brain injury in Miami assumes that TBI only occurs after a car collision or a sport-related trauma. So, the recent news on Game of Thrones actors Emilia Clarke (who most avid fans know as Khaleesi or Daenerys) has opened up discussions on the other causes of traumatic brain injuries.
Besides blunt trauma to the head, TBI can also develop because of subarachnoid hemorrhage – the condition from which the GoT star suffered back in 2011. Clarke shared in an interview that she was doing her usual workout routine at a London gym when she suddenly felt a squeezing pain in her head. While she managed to bear the pain and continue working out, she vomited and experienced an excruciating headache a few moments later.
The Me Before You actress got rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with subarachnoid hemorrhage. Essentially, this type of stroke causes blood to spill on the brain’s surface. It’s uncommon but considered highly fatal by doctors.
To save her life, her doctors had to induce blood clots to close off the leakage in her brain. It took more than three hours to complete the complex procedure done on the British actress. Two weeks into recovery, she couldn’t recall her name and had difficulties verbalizing her thoughts. Fortunately, after another week, her symptoms improved. So she began planning her filming schedule for Game of Thrones Season 2.
It was a challenging journey for her, mainly because she experienced severe exhaustion and intense bouts of headaches that required her to receive doses of morphine. Fast forward to 2013, her doctors told her that the previously found tissue mass on the opposite section of her brain had grown in size and needed immediate surgical intervention.
Unfortunately, her surgical operation didn’t go as smoothly as the first one. She had complications from the previous procedure, but the doctors successfully tackled the issue.
During post-surgery, Clarke experienced painful headaches that were worse than her previous ones. Additionally, she suffered from constant anxiety and panic attacks because she feared sustaining cognitive problems and dying.
Her medical and rehab team and her solid support system helped her pull through and overcome the challenges that came with her TBI recovery journey. Later, she established the UK-based charity SameYou to help TBI survivors cope with their injuries’ emotional and mental impacts.
While The Mother of Dragons has successfully healed and recovered from her brain injury, some patients have a different story. Some had to wait longer to see improvements in their symptoms. In contrast, others cope with paralysis or impaired cognitions – a common effect of a TBI.
